The things network indoor gateway

From its start on Kickstarter, The Things Network has grown into a global crowdsourced data network for the Internet of Things, and arguably has become one of the main driving forces in making LoRaWAN the leader in the war for low-powered, long-range, but low-bandwidth wireless connectivity. There are now a number of other LoRaWAN gateways, including the Arduino Pro Gateway which is shipping—at least in Europe—right now, and the PiSupply LoRa Gateway which is now in pre-order and should be generally available next month, all around the same price.

The new Outdoor Gateway is priced competitively with a lot of the lower-end LoRa gateways currently on the market. Unlike most of the existing gateways on the market, which tend to be built around the Semtech SX chipset, the new Indoor Gateway will be built around the SX a baseband chip designed for indoor LoRaWAN pico gateways.

It will provide an 8-channel gateway and use Wi-Fi as the backhaul. The node is intended to be an off-the-shelf LoRaWAN sensor node capable of sensing orientation, motion, proximity, light, touch, temperature, and moisture.

It offers end-to-end encryption, firmware updates over-the-air, and should be ultra-low power and running of a standard AA battery. Something that makes it very attractive to deploy into the wild, especially in those parts of the world where supply chain can be problematic.

The Generic Node will be available via RS Components later in the year, and you can sign up for the early access program on the Generic Node site. Log in Sign up.

All news.I live on a hill in West Yorkshire. It can get cold and just recently it has been really cold I had spent some time at work recently setting up some environmental sensors connected to The Things Network and decided something along those lines would be a good solution.

Once I got my hands on the node I needed to set it up. This is needed to register the device on the Things Network. I took the back off the Node by removing the 2 phillips screws to reveal its battery compartment and a Micro-USB socket. The next step was to set up my own Application on The Things Network. I then needed to register my Node.

I needed to format the data by copying and pasting the JavaScript decoder code from the Sketch into the Payload Format section of the console. This gave me the clear temperature reading I wanted.

I then started wondering if I could make it even clearer and more accessible, and after some research decided I needed to add an Integration. Again the Things Network website provided really clear instructions. When I got my Node home and put it outside I found it could not reach the nearest existing gateways, so I needed to install a gateway and decided upon The Things Network Gateway This proved easy enough, following the instructions on the web page given in the paperwork that came with the Gateway.

Once this was set up the sensor was able to join the network and send data up to The Things Network and on to Cayenne. I currently look after production at AB Open. I have a background in the arts, environmental conservation and IT support. In my spare time I do a bit of DJing and I like making things. DesignSpark Electrical Logo linkedin.
